Who this is for

Is this the right program?

Pre-Competitive is the bridge between knowing how to swim and being able to race. It suits swimmers who are already comfortable in the water and want structure.

Preparing for a first meet

Can swim, but has never raced. Needs legal strokes, a start off the blocks, turns that do not lose time, and a sense of what a race actually feels like.

Trying out for a club team

Working toward a tryout standard. We focus on the specific strokes and distances the tryout will ask for, and on the details that get swimmers cut.

Already racing, but plateaued

Training hard without getting faster. Almost always a technique ceiling, not a fitness ceiling — we find where the speed is leaking out.

Swimming for another sport

Water polo, lifeguarding or surf-life-saving athletes who need efficient, powerful freestyle to stop swimming from being the limiting factor.

What you'll learn

The work, in order.

Racing rewards efficiency far more than effort. Every block of work is aimed at moving faster for the same energy.
01

All four strokes, swum legally

  • Freestyle: high elbow catch, consistent tempo, bilateral breathing options
  • Backstroke: rotation, straight-line tracking and a legal finish
  • Breaststroke: pull-kick-glide timing, legal kick, and the pull-out
  • Butterfly: two-kick timing, flat recovery and rhythm over force
02

Starts, turns and finishes

  • Track and grab starts off the blocks
  • Backstroke starts and the underwater breakout
  • Freestyle and backstroke flip turns with a tight tuck
  • Breaststroke and butterfly open turns, and legal touch finishes
  • Streamline off every wall — the cheapest speed in the sport
03

Training and pacing

  • Reading a pace clock and holding a target time
  • Negative splitting and even-paced swimming
  • Interval sets, and understanding rest as part of training
  • Stroke count and distance-per-stroke as efficiency measures
04

Race craft

  • Warming up properly before a race
  • Race strategy for 50s, 100s and longer events
  • Reading a heat sheet and knowing meet procedure
  • Handling nerves, false-start rules and the ready room

Coaching approach

How it's coached.

Technique is trained at race speed, not just at drill speed. A stroke that only survives at slow tempo is not a competitive stroke.
01

Technique under load

Anyone can look good swimming easy. We deliberately push tempo and fatigue, then hold the swimmer to the same stroke shape.

02

Measure, then train

Stroke counts, split times and turn times give a swimmer something objective to beat. Progress you can see is progress that keeps a swimmer motivated.

03

Walls win races

Starts, turns and breakouts are a large share of any short-course race and are the fastest place to find time. They get trained deliberately, not as an afterthought.

04

Build the athlete, not just the swim

Training habits, warm-up routine, honest self-assessment and how to handle a bad race — these carry a swimmer further than any single set.

Program structure

How a block runs.

Sessions run as monthly blocks at the published times. Swimmers training two or three times a week progress substantially faster than once-a-week swimmers.
  1. 01

    Baseline

Stroke assessment across all four strokes, plus turns and starts. We establish where the time is being lost.

  2. 02

    Technical block

Targeted drill work on the limiting stroke elements, reinforced with repeats at controlled speed.

  3. 03

    Speed and pacing

Interval work, pace-clock sets and race-pace repeats — the point at which technique has to survive real effort.

  4. 04

    Race preparation

Starts, turns, finishes and race strategy sharpened for the events the swimmer is actually going to swim.
